Brow lift

About brow lifts

A brow lift is a surgical procedure that corrects a sagging or deeply furrowed brow. The procedure is often performed to lift a heavy brow and thereby convey a more awake, fresh and approachable demeanour. It can also reduce the creases, or ‘frown lines’, that develop across the forehead and on the bridge of the nose.

Procedure details

  • There are many factors to consider when considering a browlift. Often upper eyelid skin excess and fat pad prominence is looked at for treatment at the same time. Brow position and upper eyelid position are closely related in terms of aesthetic appearance. Hairline, skin type, creases and overall facial balance are evaluated when considering your needs with regard to brow position.

At Canvas Plastic Surgery, we will assess your concerns along with your general health, and always plan the treatment that is best suited to you.

  • The estimated cost can be provided following your consultation with Dr Mathew Lee. The complexity of the surgery will ultimately determine the costs but can range from $3000 for a direct browlift, to $12,000 for more complex endoscopic assisted procedures.

  • Your pre-operative planning is conducted over two visits to our Mornington office and involves the expertise of Dr Mathew Lee and the team of experienced plastic surgery nurses.

Pre-operative planning looks at your reasons for wanting a brow lift, and will ultimately establish the goals for your surgery.

It ensures that Dr Lee’s vision for what you’re looking to achieve matches yours.

Careful pre-operative analysis, measurements and photos are used to plan the right operation for you.

Detailed information about what to expect and how to prepare for your surgery will be discussed.

  • Dr Mathew Lee offers both endoscopic assisted and open brow lift techniques.

Dr Lee will carefully assess your unique anatomy to recommend the most suitable approach for you, aiming to achieve optimal results with minimal incisions and recovery time.

Adjunctive procedures including eyelid surgery, botulinum toxin injections and skin care may be recommended where appropriate.

  • Canvas Plastic Surgery will ensure you are provided with tailored support for your specific post-operative care.

Post-procedure timeline

  • After your surgery, you can typically resume drinking fluids and enjoy a light meal within two to three hours. You may experience discomfort, especially around the incision areas, for which your Specialist Plastic Surgeon will provide prescribed pain medication as needed.

It's normal to experience bruising and swelling, which typically diminish over a few weeks. Over the first 2 days, it is important to use ice, rest and gentle elevation of your head on a couple of pillows to minimise bruising and swelling.

You will require a few days off work to ensure adequate rest and recovery and to manage bruising and swelling.

  • The first follow-up appointment is at 1 week post-surgery at which time sutures may need removal, dressings will be changed and scar management will commence.

  • Further follow up is at 2 weeks.

  • Further follow up is at 6 weeks and 3 months to monitor and assess your result.

Other considerations

  • There may be complications from surgery and thankfully, the majority of these are extremely rare.

The Canvas Plastic Surgery Team will fully explain potential complications during the pre-operative planning process and commits to supporting you throughout your recovery period.

  • There is a lot of media attention relating to overseas surgery and surgery with ‘cosmetic surgeons’.

In the age of online forums, social media and misinformation, it can be difficult to separate fact from fiction.

The simplest response to this is that you get what you pay for. Cheap surgery is offered by taking shortcuts which equates to increased risk for patients. Some people are willing to take this risk and may get away with it. Unfortunately, when things go wrong, the complications can be devastating and potentially life-threatening.

In making a decision to have surgery, it is important to ensure that you see a qualified specialist plastic surgeon to discuss your options and suitability.
